Hakeem Jeffries, minority leader in the U.S. House of Representatives, is correct. The only way out of this Republican civil war is for the House Speaker to put the bipartisan Senate bill on the floor and allow all of his caucus members to vote their conscience. The Hastert Rule has to go. It’s been gummingContinue reading “A way out”

Travel 1
I spent a few days this week in transit and in Nashville, Tenn. The purpose of my trip: a NASM visit to a university in Nashville. Departing Sunday morning after dropping Maisie at the kennel, I took I-44 to I-64 to I-57 to I-24, traveling through Illinois and Kentucky on my way to Tennessee. AlongContinue reading “Travel 1”
Maisie
Someone is glad that I am home from my travels.
New shoes
For the first time in my life, I have custom-made shoes. They are beautiful, and oh so comfortable, and I am just a little bit delighted. I stumbled onto and into a custom shoe store in Bern this summer. And yes, I’m an easy mark.
On the street
Whilst driving on Saturday. On Kingshighway. My favorite is the one at the bottom left.
Life
Reposting some thoughts from 30 months ago . . . . And a very well-written blog entry, if I do say so myself.

A requirement of professorship in a tenure-line position: service to the university and to the wider community. Over the last few years, I’ve upped my service activity,Continue reading “Service”
Lifers
Years ago, when I was barely 20 years old, I had a huge realization one day. I was a college student at the time, and that summer I was working for my university. Arriving at the Admissions office on July day, I was struck by how empty the campus was. And out of nowhere theseContinue reading “Lifers”
#TBT: Pre-school
I’m thinking back to my pre-schooling days. When I was tyke, socialization was achieved in church nursery and in playing with neighborhood kids. And perhaps a church social after Sunday evening services. And with cousins at family events. I don’t recall that my sister Karen or I went to pre-school at all. Of course weContinue reading “#TBT: Pre-school”
