Book #2 of the year. Truth be told, I started this one a couple of years ago. The book was recommended to me by a bike tour guide in Potsdam several summers ago. The mistakes these men (and they were all men, as this was 1919) made have led to a century of conflict inContinue reading “Versailles”

New specs
The latest spectacles. Thanks, Erkers! And the prescription has changed enough that I’m having to decide which frames get new lenses, and thereby pare down the rack of spectacles in my bedroom. And I must move to tri-focals for everything now!
Churchill
Book #1 of the year. Finished. Many more to go!
A most important read
Conversions
Yesterday was the First Sunday of Epiphany. The Feast of the Baptism of Jesus. The story was told again, around the parts of the Christian world that follow the calendar of the Roman church, of John the Baptizer and Jesus and the river Jordan and the voice of God the Father saying “This is myContinue reading “Conversions”
Alas
I try to fill this blog with hope, and no small amount of humor. But this week the heart is heavy. I am mindful of the psalmist (Psalm 123): 1 I lift up my eyes to you, to you who sit enthroned in heaven.2 As the eyes of slaves look to the hand of their master, as the eyes ofContinue reading “Alas”
300

Meanwhile, I go on alone at home, not hugging those I love. Not able to teach in the manner I would wish. NotContinue reading “300”
The Capitol
December 2001. Ball State University Singers were visiting Washington, D.C. to sing at the White House during a Christmas open house. The day before, we were met at the east steps of the House of Representatives at the Capitol, by none other than our congressman, Mike Pence. He was gracious and kind. Pence escorted usContinue reading “The Capitol”
#TBT: 17
I was 17. This photo was taken in the photo darkroom at Lee’s Summit High School in September 1978. I weighed quite a bit less that I do now. I still wear patterned shirts.
Sausage rolls
I made pork sausage from scratch on New Year’s Eve, and a rough puff pastry. Sausage rolls were the result. I freeze them, then pull one out, wrap it in aluminum foil and pop it in the oven, then shower and prep for the day. Less than half an hour later, I have a hotContinue reading “Sausage rolls”
