I had the great joy of finally attending a live production of Pierre, Natasha, and the Great Comet on 1812 this past Friday at the Sargent Conservatory of Theatre Arts at Webster University. My friend and colleague Tali Allen (Muny Director of Education) was music director. The production was brilliantly directed by Michael Baxter, aContinue reading “Great Comet”

Saying goodbye
My senior year of college was 1982-83. For much of that school year, I wrote an editorial column for the Southwest Baptist University Omnibus, the school newspaper, For the next few months, I am posting each of these columns, scanned from the original Omnibus newspaper, on the 41st anniversary of their initial publication. Here isContinue reading “Saying goodbye”
Fire
2 Lawn Place burned in the pre-dawn hours of Friday, April 26. I lament the loss of property; I’m glad that no one was injured. And let me just say, there’s nothing like being awakened at 5 AM by the blast of a fire truck air horn. It’s like the mother ship alighting outside yourContinue reading “Fire”
Dickinson
I loved this book review on Fresh Air this past Thursday: https://www.npr.org/2024/04/25/1246249850/emily-dickinsons-letters-review “. . . this new volume of Dickinson’s letters feel like both an intrusion and an outwitting of the silence of death — something I want to believe Dickinson would have relished.”
Aunt Esther
Yesterday was the 112th anniversary of my beloved Aunt Esther’s birth. Not a day goes by that I don’t miss her. For more, please see https://jeffreycarter.wordpress.com/2024/04/10/aunt-esther-12/.

Sir Andrew Davis
Sir Andrew Davis has died. https://apnews.com/article/andrew-davis-conductor-obituary-b967ff41c7b1720b6d906c150f508bd1 I saw him conduct several times with symphony orchestras and at Chicago Lyric and the Metropolitan Opera. He was a special mentor to my New Zealander friend Tecwyn. Another great has left us.
Will
I caught Ragtime at Kirkwood PAC Saturday evening, in a triumphant production by Gateway Center for the Performing Arts. My voice student Will Tao was Father. I’m awfully proud of him. And blown away by the talent on the stage. GCPA is doing superb work!
