New Year’s Eve 2008

[I’ve been blogging for two years, as of this week.] Tonight is the last night of 2008.  I’ve made some shortbread this evening, and find myself now on my sofa, the dog asleep by my side, a fire in the fireplace, at peace with the world. I just heard this evening from Mark John Wester,Continue reading “New Year’s Eve 2008”

Samson update

Sammy and I went to Forest Park today for a walk.  We had a good time, but I think he enjoyed it more than I did.  He’s a burrower, having burrowed under the blankets last night as we went to bed, and sleeping against my legs.  Funny thing, though – he rolled out of bedContinue reading “Samson update”

Samson and Corby

As Corby is ripping some CDs, Samson rests.  From the library at home:

Samson

I’m a father.  I adopted today a dog, a Feist, part of the terrier bloodlines.  He’s small but mighty.  I’ve named him Samson. Samson is much loved by all, already.  The folks at the Humane Society were all, to a person, cheering and rejoicing that he was ‘going home.’  They made me promise to bringContinue reading “Samson”

Strange doings at the bank

So I’m at the drive-thru window at the bank, in the second lane from the left.  I had a surreal couple of minutes. This lady in the Saturn SUV next to me was taking ecstatic puffs on her cigarette.  Her eyelids were actually fluttering! Then I noticed the recently-deceased pigeon, face down on the pavement,Continue reading “Strange doings at the bank”

From the family home

Saturday morning now.  I’m in Lee’s Summit, the family home, where at 7.30 a.m. I’m ready to leave the Hampton Inn where I’ve stayed for the last two nights, and to take breakfast with TN. I arrived here around 5 p.m. Friday, as the sun was setting in a beautiful way off to the southwest. Continue reading “From the family home”

A Christmas carol

Before the marvel of this night Adoring, fold your wings and bow, Then tear the sky apart with light And with your news the world endow. Proclaim the birth of Christ and peace, That fear and death and sorrow cease: Sing peace, sing peace, sing gift of peace. Sing peace, sing gift of peace. AwakeContinue reading “A Christmas carol”

Hail, thou ever-blessed morn!

See amid the winter’s snow, born for us on earth below, see, the gentle Lamb appears, promised from eternal years. Hail that ever blessèd morn, hail redemption’s happy dawn, sing through all Jerusalem: Christ is born in Bethlehem.
