The Lee’s Summit, Missouri schools begin their 2024-25 school year today.

My youngest nephew having now graduated from Lee’s Summit High School, my hometown schools don’t have a Carter family member enrolled for the first time in 22 years.

In fact, for the past 53 years, beginning at Pleasant Lea Elementary School with me and Karen in March 1971, Lee’s Summit Public Schools have had enrolled a child or grandchild of Richard & Marie Carter for a total of 41 of those years!

We are now at an ending point. Karen’s two married adult children each have two of their own, but they live in Bolivar and in Moberly. Beth’s now-adult children show no signs of grandchildren yet. I’m a confirmed bachelor, as the saying goes.

So there it is. Our family’s time with Lee’s Summit schools is ended. Little did we preacher’s kids know in 1971 how deeply we would imbed our lives in this town and in this school system.
