Secretary

Whilst traveling two weekends ago, I stopped at several antique malls along I-70 in Missouri.

At Brass Armadillo in Blue Springs, I saw an antique secretary I just had to have.

But though the price was right, I would have had to figure out how to get it from Blue Springs to Saint Louis, and that wasn’t in the cards.

I didn’t stop thinking about it and wishing, though. So one week ago I took a look at Craigslist — yes, Craigslist still exists — and found a 100-year-old secretary in decent shape for sale at the right price. In Edwardsville, only 30 minutes away.

I drove up Monday to take a look. The piece needs some elbow grease. In fact, it would benefit from a light sanding and a new coat of stain, then several coats of lemon oil.

But that must await another day.

The secretary arrived at my house late Tuesday afternoon, thanks to the most generous help of Lou and Dennis Bailey.

I’m very happy indeed!

But I broke my rule: any more furniture in the house means something must go out!

Note: every piece of furniture in my house that sits plumb against a wall needs a shim to keep it plumb, since nothing in this old house is perfectly straight. 🤓
