Commemorations

Today is the 55th anniversary of the death of Ralph Vaughan Williams, one of the foremost British composers of the 20th century.  RVW’s music is terribly important in my own life, and today I remember him with great fondness.

At the Cathedral Basilica.

Today is also the Feast of St. Louis the King, the patron saint of Saint Louis, Missouri.  The Cathedral Basilica of Saint Louis was quite full this morning for the Mass in honor of St. Louis.  I was delighted to be a member of the pick-choir that sang Boyce, Marenzio, Palestrina, and the Propers for this feast day.  All of the diocese’ seminarians were there as well, decked in white cottas and making a very long procession indeed.  The pageantry was worthy of a French king.
