Barbara Cook

I’m seeing news reports of the death of Barbara Cook.

Cook is another of those starring lights that I never got to see in person.  I had tickets last year to her Off-Broadway engagement, but the show collapsed and never did make it to New World Stages.

My recordings of her performances at Carnegie Hall and in cabaret shows are some of my favorite discs.

My boss tells the story of seeing Miss Cook at the Schubert Theatre in the New Haven preview of She Loves Me.  He was on the fly rail, working while he was at Yale.  She stopped the show every night.  And he knew he was witnessing the birth of a star.

Rest in peace, Barbara Cook.  Your voice was one of the glories of this art that we love.
