I just spent 30 minutes total talking to three different people I know and care about in China and the Philippines.
This ugly typhoon has been devastating to at least one of them.
We are all connected . . . part of this world.
May we never cease to care for each other, and for this fragile earth, our island home.
Yesterday was Jessye Norman’s birthday.
The great American opera diva is now 73 years old.
I’ve never witnessed her in live performance, but I have numerous recordings. Along with Beverly Sills, she remains at the top of my list of great American sopranos.
Her discography numbers more than 150 recordings. I own probably 30 of them.
For years now, I have passed along to students her admonition to learn piano so that you can always accompany yourself, and not need a musical babysitter.
Miss Norman’s recording of the Strauss Four Last Songs continues to be my all-time favorite. Here’s “Beim Schlafengehen.” Listen and weep.
