Poppie

Poppie is second from right. I’m second from left. This photo was taken in Columbia, Missouri, at the first house my parents ever owned.

My maternal grandfather, Edwin ‘Poppie’ Lee Blocher, Sr., died 50 years ago this morning.

I was six years old, and I remember coming downstairs — at the house on College Avenue in Hannibal — to find my parents up and about before dawn.  My mother was 28 years old, and had just had her third child earlier that year.

I’m told that Poppie died of a brain aneurysm.  G-ma Ruth lived another 34 years as a widow.

Rest in peace, Poppie.
