Olympic Fanfare

Thanks to my friend and student Mark Boyle for the link to John Williams’ “Olympic Fanfare and Theme.”  Yes, parts sound a bit like Darth Vader, and other parts like triumph from a certain lost ark, but Mark is right: this music has held up remarkably well after 32 years.  Williams segues brilliantly from the initial fanfare (read on for more about that) to his own joyous evocation of sport.

And better yet, Leo Arnaud‘s 1958 “Bugler’s Dream” still gives chills.  This music has been our USA Olympic signal since 1968 — or basically, from my first memory of the Olympic Games.
