Rarely in my 25+ years of teaching have I bonded as much, and helped a student find his voice, as much as I have with Charlie Ingram. This kid is going places. I’m delighted that those places include a summer in Saint Louis.
But this week’s last voice lesson was a teary affair for both of us. I have no idea what to expect at his jury next week, since I often go on-script at a jury and turn off the personal feelings when I’m playing the piano. But … if Charlie breaks on his last song, as he did yesterday … I’ll break too.
Teaching is such joy when surrounded by the kind and caliber and quality of students we have at Webster University. My voice students make teaching even more a joyous task.
