Working at home this evening after 10 p.m., I have listened – as I have every year for the past decade and more – to the Last Night of the Proms on the BBC Radio 3.
What joy this is, and what hopes I have of one day being in London to experience this tremendous tradition!
As I listen now, just before midnight, to the archive from last Saturday, the crowd is growing wilder and livelier with “Land of Hope and Glory” (the words to which I have yet to memorize). Parry’s “Jerusalem” will follow in short order, and then the British National Anthem.
And I shall cry, for that is what I do when Jerusalem and God Save the Queen are in rapid order.
