Ladue Horton Watkins

I had the joy tonight of conducting a massed choir of 4th- through 12th-graders at Ladue Horton Watkins High School in a district choir night.  The elementary kids were incredibly wonderful and well-behaved, even though I was teasing some of them.

We had a good time with the finale, Greg Gilpin’s Rise Above the Walls.  This piece was commissioned by me for the Gateway Men’s Chorus, and premiered in 2010.  It’s now published in several voicings and an orchestration, all through Hal Leonard.  YouTube is filled with performances of the piece by various choirs.

Here’s a shot of the elementary students on stage tonight:

To this we added another 100 middle school and high school students!

And here is the track of Gateway Men’s Chorus performing Above the Walls in one of the first-ever performances.

LSHS Hi-Life

During my last year of high school, I was on the school newspaper staff.  Lee’s Summit High School’s Hi-Life was in its 51st volume that year.

I was poking around in the basement tonight looking for an old scrapbook, and I foundHi-Life newspapers from my student journalist days.

Here’s one of the articles with my by-line:

An article about LSHS' new performing arts center, one in which, sadly, I did not perform until six years after graduating high school.
