In 1975, I sang as part of a select group of eighth-grade choristers from Pleasant Lea Junior High in Lee’s Summit, Missouri, at the state music educators convention. Verna Boten (now Dr. Verna Brummett), led the group, which was called then (and still is) Black and Gold Singers. Now my niece Anna sings in the group. And Verna, after a world-wandering career, leads the group once again. How fun that my niece adores the same teacher I adored!
From that 1975 performance, here’s If I Had a Hammer.
I’m singing the highest part. Six months later, my voice would drop from soprano descant to bass over the summer. I started ninth grade in a different octave.
