At Grace and Holy Trinity Cathedral today, Herbert Howells ruled the musical scene.
John Schaefer played one of Howells’ posthumously-published works for the prelude – a little Quasi lento: teneramente that qouted bits of the anthem we were to sing later. John closed with another HH work from that same set.
I conducted the psalm anthem O pray for the peace of Jerusalem, one of the works on which I wrote my doctoral dissertation. We closed the service with ‘All my hope on God is founded’ with the hymn tune Michael, named for HH’s son. I visited Michael’s grave in Twigworth in June.
HH makes me happy. So does being at GHTC.
