My dear friend Loo Kia Chun emailed me this morning with the very happy news that a men’s chorus in Taiwan has asked me to compose a new choral work for them. They want this in the next few weeks….!
I’m to choose the text, and that text will most likely be a psalm from the Old Testament.
They ask for an unaccompanied work of about four minutes’ duration. Aside from some range considerations, I have free riegn to write what I hear. This is exciting news indeed, and a first for me–an international commission. I’ll have an opportunity later this year to travel to the Pacific Rim to hear the work live, and perhaps to take a bow as composer.
(Loo was a Kansas student. We sang in Chamber Choir together in his last year at KU, 1996-97, and traveled to the UK together on a wonderful performance tour, staying in the UK for a few more days of tourism and sightseeing. He is one my most loved friends, a fabulous tenor, and, happily for me, a real advocate of my music and career.)
