Today is the 29th anniversary of the death of my muse, Herbert Howells.
I’ve written of him on numerous occasions on this blog. Simply use the search bar at right to find those entries.
How fitting that today of all days I would run into Dr. Paul Laird and his wife, Joy, at KMEA. Paul was my dissertation advisor and mentor on my writing project about Howells. He is also one of this country’s reigning scholars on musical theatre and Bernstein, believe it or not.
Joy sang in the choir I led at First Presbyterian Church. Their precocious young daughter is now a high school senior and performing in the all-state choir.
I was delighted to see them both today and have a few minutes to visit.
Rest in peace, Mr. Howells.
